Whilst travelling in 2011 Caroline visited Asia and became very interested in Buddhism and meditation, which affected her perceptions and appreciation of the world around her.
Caroline regularly uses mixed metals in her work and delights in the tones that can be obtained in Copper and Brass, and the striking contrasts achieved. This new collection takes inspiration from Autumn leaves. The brief being “Woodland” Caroline observing the nature all around her at that time of year, attempts to capture the feeling of time passing, as the leaves begin to turn beautiful reds, yellows and browns, as they decay and fall to the ground and begin the cycle of the seasons once again. Another year passes, reminding us that everything is impermanent and constantly changing, this is something to embrace, flow with, and celebrate as we are all apart of the same universal energy, driving all aspects of nature.
Caroline takes a keen interest in symbolism, the Tree represents Life and the mystical connection of the earth with heaven and the underworld. Caroline chooses to use the shapes of the Elm leaf which represents dignity, and Walnut leaf being hope and joy. The single leaf is an ancient heraldic symbol said to signify happiness. Caroline’s designs take care and consideration to use the leaf stem as the focus for each piece, this symbolises new life sprouting from the old in the same way that the leaves will decay back into the earth to feed the trees and new leaves will bloom again in the spring.
